Billy Cart Cup WinnersMove over Bathurst, the annual Woodlands Billycart Cup is fast becoming the racing highlight of the year with the 2009 Cup on Sunday October 18 proving to be the best event yet.

A record 25 brave local billycart teams stepped up to the line, not letting the Cup trophy out of their sights as they conquered the chicanes on the tough course to race across the finish line.

More than 100 spectators crowded the streets to cheer on their favourite teams as they competed in the three categories, Turbo Teens, the Family Challenge, and the Corporate Challenge.

Woodlands Project Director Greg Tupicoff said the local support for the 2009 Woodlands Billycart Cup was overwhelming.

“The popularity of the Billycart Cup just keeps growing each year as more members of the community realise just how much old-fashioned fun can be had,” Mr Tupicoff said.

“Competitors raced around a street course that not only tested the workmanship of their Billycarts but their driving skills too, so a big congratulations must go to the three winning teams.”

General Lee in a fire engine red cart were the proud winners of the Family Challenge and Logan City Council beat four local business teams to take out the Corporate Challenge race. The best presented Billycart was awarded to the Flying Scott’s Men.

Team Lightning, with driver Marcus Hahnheuser, won last year’s Billycart Cup, and came back this year to defend their title. Now a winner two years in a row, Marcus claimed victory in the Turbo Teens challenge.

Woodlands Community Inc President Collin Sivalingum said it was great to see kids, parents and local businesses trackside, cheering on their favourite teams.

“Woodlands Community Inc was thrilled so many members of the community rolled their sleeves up and got involved in the day,” Mr Sivalingum said.

Proud sponsors came along for the ride, cheering on their favourite billycart team. Woodlands Community Inc would like to thank Delfin Woodlands, Blueprint, Albert & Logan News, Mediamix, Swimart Beenleigh and Bendigo Bank Logan branch.
